6 DAYS CLIMBING KILIMANJARO RONGAI ROUTE

There are six established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain. The Lemosho and Shira routes approach from the west. The Rongai route approaches from the north. All routes except Marangu and Rongai descend via Mwerka.

Rongai Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via The Rongai Route

Less crowded because of its remote location the route offers trekkers a unique wilderness experience where it is possible to see large wildlife like antelope, elephant and buffalo. As there is typically less moisture on this side of the mountain you are less likely to encounter rain and have more unclouded views of the peak.  While it is flatter, it does not give the climb high sleep low option and therefore recommended to select more days for acclimatization.

The Rongai route is one of the easier routes up Kilimanjaro. Rongai is the only route to approach Kilimanjaro from the north and the descent is via the Marangu Route. Summit night from Kibo Hut is steep and follows the same path taken by the Marangu route which passes Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak.

7 Days Lemosho Route Mount Kilimanjaro climb

Lemosho route is considered one among the prettiest route on Kilimanjaro. We start trekking within the thick, fertile rainforest until we reach the wildflowers and shrubs of the heath ecosystem. Approaching from the west, we cross one among most beautiful areas on Kilimanjaro, the vast Shira Plateau, before traversing the mountain along the southern circuit. The Lemosho route is for those with previous backpacking experience.

Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania and transfer to Arusha

Welcome to Tanzania – Today you will be meet at Kilimanjaro International Airport and then transferred to the hotel in Arusha. The drive from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha is approx one hour. Meals – Dinner at Mvuli hotel in Arusha. https://www.mvulihotels.co.tz  bed and breakfast included.

After completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi park gate, we drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to succeed in the Lemosho road head. The last section of the road is of poor quality and difficult to drive after rain, sometimes we start walking a kilometer or two below the road head. We frequently have our lunch at the roadhead before beginning to walk. it’s a simple day of walking up a little path through beautiful and plush forest. We camp at Lemosho Big Tree Camp.

Day 3: 7 Days Lemosho Route – Shira One” (3,550 m); 5-6 hours walking.

We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to succeed in the rim of the Shira Plateau. There’s a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp within the center of the plateau at “Shira One.

Day 4: 7 Days Lemosho Route – Great Barranco valley (3,900 m); 7-8 hours walking

A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to steer on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4,550 m) we descend to rock bottom of the good Barranco valley sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below near our campsite at Barranco valley.

Day 5: 7 Days Lemosho Route – Karanga campsite (4,000 m); 4-5 hours walking

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there’s only a brief distance to our camp at Karanga (4,000 m), the last water point on the thanks to the summit.

Day 6:7 Days Lemosho Route – Barafu campsite (4,600 m); 3-4 hours walking

We follow a simple path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to succeed in the Barafu campsite (4,600 m) for lunch. There’s a brief acclimatization walk to the plateau at rock bottom of the South-East valley (4,800 m). The rest of the day is spent resting in preparation for the ultimate ascent before a really early night.

We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1 a.m. in order that we will be abreast of the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow also steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735 m), in about five or six hours. we’ll rest there for a brief time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. those that are still feeling strong can make the 2-hour trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing on the brink of the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that also occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we still descend to succeed in our final Mweka forest camp.

7 Days CLIMBING KILIMANJARO MACHAME ROUTE

The 7 Days Machame Route, also referred to as the Whiskey route, is one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro and a favorite for Active Dream Tours. Despite being a tough climb compared to the Marangu route, the Machame route has one of the highest summit success rates given the topography of the route which allows climbers to “trek high & sleep low” hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization. Unlike the Marangu route which is a gradual ascent, the Machame route has steeper trails and climbers walk longer distances. This route offers some of the most spectacular scenery while on the mountain. The Machame route starts in the south-west side of the mountain and proceeds steeply north, traversing the Shira plateau and eventually joining the Shira and Lemosho routes at the Shira camp. The Machame route can be done in minimum 6 days, but a 7- day trek is recommended so climbers are well rested and acclimatized before making the final ascent to the summit.

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Arusha you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have the entire necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day. Overnight at your hotel choose

It’s a tough, steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep, as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.

7 Days CLIMBING KILIMANJARO UMBWE ROUTE

Approaching from the south, the Umbwe route is a short, steep and direct climb. After reaching Barranco Camp, the trail follows the southern circuit to the summit. The descent is done via the Mweka route.

Major reason that Umbwe route considered to be very difficult is its steepness in the first two days and its short time of acclimatization. This route is attempted by strong hikers who are also confident of their ability to acclimatize to altitude.Though, hikers must be pre- acclimatized prior to trying this route, particularly if one opts to summit via Western Breach as you gain altitude very rapidly over rapidy over a smaller distance. The reward this route offers is not only the physical challenge, but you also get the luxury of trekking in privacy at slightest till you meet up with the other explorers at Barranco camp.

,

DAY 01: AIRPORT – ARUSHA

After breakfast, you will be driven to the Machame gate where registration formalities will be completed. From there, we proceed to the Umbwe Gate (1641 m), passing through villages with coffee and banana plantations. The air is thick with moisture and the path is usually muddy. The route initially follows a forestry track winding up through the natural rain forest. It then narrows and steepens to climb the ridge between the Lonzo and Umbwe rivers, with huge trees surrounding you. The path offers some spectacular views of deep gorges and, if you are lucky, a glimpse of Kilimanjaro towering above you in the distance. The camp is perched between huge trees and thick undergrowth.

The path flattens as you approach Barranco Valley. From Umbwe ridge, the route descends slightly to the Barranco camp.
